McDonell's Company

John McDonell was a native of Invernesshire, Scotland, who arrived in North America in 1773 and settled near Johnstown, NY. He was commissioned in the 84th Foot in June 1775. He was attached to St Leger's expedition against Fort Stanwix in 1777, and eventually secured a transfer to the Rangers. He was commissioned a Captain 1 August 1778. On Walter Butler's death in October 1781, McDonell assumed many of the administrative duties which Butler was performing. This was probably the fourth company to be mustered complete. This company saw action in all the major campaigns in New York and Pennsylvania. After the war, McDonell settled along the St Lawrence River and became a member of the 1st Legislature of Upper Canada.
